School Uniforms Defined: School uniforms range from the formal to the informal. Some schools that have implemented school uniforms have chosen what one usually thinks of in connection to Catholic schools: nice pants and white shirts for boys, jumpers and white shirts for girls. However, most public schools are turning to something more casual and more acceptable to parents and students: khakis or jeans and knit shirts of varying colors. The latter appear to be more affordable too because they can be used outside of school. Many school districts that have implemented school uniforms have provided some sort of financial assistance for families that can not afford the extra expense.
Potential Benefits of School Uniforms
- Preventing gang colors, etc. in schools
- Decreasing violence and theft because of clothing and shoes
- Instilling discipline among students
- Reducing need for administrators and teachers to be 'clothes police' (for example, determining whether shorts are too short, etc.)
- Reducing distractions for students
- Instilling a sense of community
- Helping schools recognize those who do not belong on campus
I think that we should not have school uniforms becuase people would get annoyed with wearing the same clothes everyday. But is would not bother me in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the use of uniforms because it would cost some money and probelm with some people having it or not.It would cause chaos at first,many students would probally complain or even have try to talk with their parents to change schools.Many students would try to make petisions. Maybe some people will like them but very few. I personally dont like them. Wearing your own choice of clothes is a way of expercing your self. So i think having uniforms is not the best idea.
ReplyDeleteI believe that uniforms act as a neturalizer as there is range of wealth in each school district. Uniforms create a unified community throughout the school. I however argue that each student is entitled to express their own personality through their wardrobe. Uniforms have their pros and cons like any topic of disscssion.

I think that uniforms are a bad idea because kids need to express themselves. Having uniforms reduces your abilaty to do that. They reduce your creativity, and independence.
ReplyDeleteI don't want uniforms because I don't want to have to wear the same things everyday. And I don't like how they use Wear-What-You-Want Day as a reward!!!
ReplyDeletei think that having school uniforms would not be useful to the school, it would just provoke children and make them rambunctious. it would also cost money that the school doesn't have right now. many students would not follow the rules and wear what they wanted. A lot of people take pride in what they wear and express themselves through different kinds of clothing. I personally think that having school uniforms would not be the best or most important decision the school could make right now.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be weird to have school uniforms, but I know that it make kids have better grade averages and much more. Although when it gets closer to the end of the year it starts to get hot and I wouldnt want to wear pants and a huge shirt. Kids should have the right to express themselves and feel that they can. I know that a lot of people cant afford clothes a lot so that could be a problem also.
ReplyDeletei think that school uniforms are stupid, and that it reduces your independence and self-creativity. i think that it also is kinda gross to wear the same clothes everyday, and it makes people seem dull and uninteresting to other people... and i just think that uniforms are stupid!
ReplyDeleteI don't think that we should have uniforms because they cost money and the economy is really bad right now. So not to many people would be able to get it and that wouldn't be good. I would not like having uniforms either becasue I like picking out my own clothes everyday and if I had to have someone else pick my clothes out well I just would not like that what so ever.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brenden, most people would hate the idea of wearing the same clothes, not being allowed to express themsevles, and being controlled on something most would find ridiculous. Some of the benefits listed are odd, but i guess reasonable such as ''Reducing distractions for students''. I personally I wouldn't care because to me clothes isn't a big thing.
ReplyDeleteI think that school uniforms could be a good and bad thing.It could be good because it could help families who have little money save money, also it could help decrease bullying for people who get made fun of for the way they dress. It's bad because girls and boys are already seperated enough and by adding school uniforms I believe that it will seperate them even more. Also it takes away from the small amount of freedom that the kids have.
ReplyDeleteI dont think uniforms are a horrible idea, because they cost money(money that we dont have), and all the students here need to express themselfs. If we had uniforms nobody would be able to express themselfs
ReplyDeleteI disagree with requiring school uniforms because many students would not like having very limited options in what they wear. It's also very boring to wear the same sort of clothes over and over again. Although, requiring uniforms would fix some issues it would also cause a lot too. In my opinion, our school is better without adopting uniforms.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should have uniforms because not everyone would be able to afford one. Kids should be able to show their personality through their clothes. Uniforms can't keep people from forming gangs. It might keep adults from seeing the gangs, but the other students would probably know who the gang members are. Uniforms are a waste of money. Most kids wont want to wear them out of school. If Fowler decided to make kids wear uniforms, how would that work if some people can't even follow a simple dress code?
ReplyDeleteI think school uniforms are a bad idea, they dont let students express their own styles. If you have uniforms everyone is the same, they also cost money thats why I think that usually only private schools have them, because parents are already paying for them to go to a higher end school.

Also it would prevent gang and violence and other harmful things.
And it is a place to learn not worry abou what your wearing.
But i think we should choose what the uniforms should be.
I think that in this economy we need to save money for more important things like paper instead of buying new clothes. It is important that kids don't wear inappropriate clothing, but in this economy crisis it shouldn't be one of our bigger worries. If we let parents know the dress code they could make their kids put appropriate clothes on before they leave school.
ReplyDeleteI think that having uniforms is really quite pointless. You dont want to be wearing the same thing as everyone else in the school. If everyone is wearing the same thing, it will not be original and it will look really boring. Kids our age want to be different. I dont think that any schools in ANY district should wear unifroms. Not everyone that wears blue and red are necessarily affiliated in a gang either. I dont know about other schools, but ours doesnt have a lot of clothes theft. Although i do understand about people wearing inappropriate clothes. I still dont think its a good idea to have uniforms though.

I think that not having them gives people a way to express themselves whether they are jocks, preps, nerds, emos, "gangsters" or any other type of person. Also just because people wear red or blue doesn't mean they are gang related. Seriously they need to come out with something new because thats getting old " Oh your wearing red your in a gang! " wow thats so unfair.Anyways my main idea would be that thats not a good idea unless they want most of the people to go to Twality =]

ReplyDeleteI think school uniforms are kinda of a bad idea. Seriously, i think its silly that the school is trying to supress a child's own expression, their right to express themselves. i don't think schools should be able to decide what a child wears. if a child's clothing doesn't violate the dress code, there shouldn't be any nessecary need to make kids wear uniforms.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that getting school uniforms is a good idea because it would cost a lot of money. People would get annoyed by having to wear uniforms to school every single day, and they wouldn't be able to wear any of their outfits to school anymore so there would be no reason for buying anymore clothes because they would be wearing the same thing over and over again. The uniforms would get boring after days and students would stop wearing the uniforms to school. Colors are just colors and just by wearing a certain color doesn't mean that students are in gangs.
ReplyDeleteI think we should have school unifoms because school is not a place to hold a fashion show; school is a place to come and learn. Others think that wearing clothes will express their individuality, but there are other ways to express yourself, clothing is not the only option. If people think that is the only way, then that's their problem. Uniforms could increase students learning and violence would decrease in a hurry. But again, this is my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think that school uniforms are a bad idea. Students should be able to express their own ideas and wear what they want. Yes there are gang colors and symbals, but even with uniforms that will still happen. Students wont like uniforms and one of the privliges of going to a public school is not having to wear uniforms.
ReplyDeleteI think that our school should accept a loose school uniform. What I mean is that we should have a uniform that is not super strict, but we have a choice of shirt color and type of pants. I think that a dress shirt should be for both guys and girls, to kind if create a unity. Having a school uniform would be good for the school because then people can not discriminate others for the clothes that they wear or for the stuff advertized on the shirt.

ReplyDeletei dont think Fowler Middle School should have uniforms because i know ilot of kids are not going to like the uniforms, especially now when a lot of kids are trying to stand out or look different. its would be something hard to accoplish that. and i know that it could help with the colorses of gangs of stuff. i think thst all the gangs things is soon going to end so i dont think it would matter.

ReplyDeleteI'm not totally against uniforms. Uniforms have thier pros and cons so really, I could go either way.Teenagers are constantly striving to show their individualality through clothing styles and accesories. But having uniforms can show kids that you aren't what your clothes are, and that you can be yourself and be proud, no matter what brand or style shirt you're wearing. It would be kind of boring to see everyone wearing the same thing, though.
